A little over a year ago I purchased this brushed white oak, solid wood hutch at my favourite thrift shop for $29.00 and managed somehow to squeeze it into my car so my husband and son could carry it inside.
The bottom shelf holds various books written by Elizabeth George, Emilie Barnes, Janette Oke, Karen Kingsbury, my collection of Gladys Taber's Stillmeadow series as well as some of my latest by Grace Livingston Hill ~ books that share other women's hearts on subjects dear to my heart and specifically for me as a Christian woman eager to grow in my life before the Lord.
Since the above photos were taken, that shelf is now FULL so I'm going to have to figure out where newer additions can find a home :o)
Blessings,

The Silent Observer
"I was born, like my 7 brothers and sisters, in a house atop a hill overlooking lovely Bras d'Or Lake."
So begins Christy MacKinnon's story of life as a little girl in 19th-century Nova Scotia, Canada.
Through wonderful images created with her own words and her watercolors, she tells of a simple, charming life on the family farm; of learning with her father, the master of her town's one-room schoolhouse; and of her eventual travel to Halifax to attend a "special" school.
As with many children in the 1800s, Christy became deaf after a "seige of whooping cough," a sickness common then, which she barely survived. Silent Observer opens to young readers a world rarely seen today.
They will be thrilled by her family's ride in a horse-drawn sleigh over a frozen northern lake, and her close encounters with a noisy bull and a "gentleman" ram. Children and adults alike will warm to her cheerful memories of the simple pleasure of playing in a flower-filled field with her brothers and sisters.
They will discover, too, that young Christy crossed paths with many vital figures of the day, beginning with frequent visits by Alexander Graham Bell, and later with a momentous meeting with Helen Keller.
Rendered in lovely, full-color illustrations, Silent Observer is an affectionate, poignant memoir of childhood as seen through the eyes of a vivacious young girl.
Christy MacKinnon became an illustrator for F.A.O. Schwarz in New York City, retired in 1948 to Natick, MA, where she painted her childhood stories until her death in 1981.
What a beautiful book this is!! You can even enjoy a preview of it online :o)
I was very fortunate to find this wonderful book while thrifting a couple of weeks ago ~ I had purchased 4 books @ 69 CENTS each so this book was FREE!!
[ this sketch of the book was compiled from reviews at Barnes and Noble as well as Gupress.]

Every Now and Then -- UPDATED
I haven't done nearly as much reading as I do in the cooler months of the year but I have recently read some great books!Karen Kingsbury is one of my favourite authors and I recently finished THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN which I borrowed from the local library.
I have just finished EVERY NOW AND THEN which is #3 in her 911 Series and I can say that it was excellent!!
I find that a LIST is handy because some of them are part of a series while others are stand alone titles!
This one was given to me by my daughter in the spring ~ she had come in a runner-up or something like that in one of Karen Kingsbury's website contests and won this book which was autographed by K.K. to me, personally :o)
I found a copy of OUR ULTIMATE REFUGE at a discount store near me and bought this wonderful book for only $3.00!It's all about suffering and the book of Job and really is a fabulous read, where I learned so many things ... about the Lord and myself as one of His own :o)
